How to ring an organisation or a person about your Inquiry. (Preparing your script-what to say)
To phone someone about your inquiry you must have prepared a written script first.
It is absolutely essential that you are polite and respectful. Use your manners at all times please.
1) Introduce yourself/yourselves. Say who you are (Year 8 students) and what school and class you're from. Don't just say BBI. Most people won't know what BBI stands for. 2) Explain exactly what your Inquiry task is. You have been challenged with the question "How can I make a positive change to the community I live in?"
3) Explain about the task you have to do, about investigating an issue in the community. Tell them about the issue you've chosen, why you chose it and how you hope to be able to make a positive contribution to help solve that issue.
4) Ask them if they'd mind answering some questions. Ask if it's convenient to ask those questions now. Offer to ring back when it's convenient if it's not.
5) Ask them your appropriate questions. Record your answers. You may use the speaker phone up at the office so that you can all take turns to ask the questions and all listen to the answers. (You must get written permission to use the phone first) Feel free to phone from home if that is convenient for you.
6) Ask them if there would be anything that you could do as a group to assist them. Negotiate what you could do to help them. Explain that it is possible to take time off school with your teachers permission and come to help them during the day. Also explain that a parent would bring you and supervise you directly on the day.
7) Ask them if they have any questions for you. Explain that your teacher Miss Knowles may wish to talk to them about any organisational matters. (if you are going to visit them) Please give them a contact number for the school so that they can contact us if they wish to. 09 534 2896. You may even give them my e-mail address. stacey@bbi.school.nz 8) Thank them very much for their time. (Remember to record down the name(s) of the person/people you have spoken to. This is very important in case you need to talk with them again and it's also good manners to address them by name.)
